Corn Creek Springs in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Las Vegas Freebie

Corn Creek Springs is a field station for the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, which is owned by the federal government. It’s located northwest off highway 95, outside the greater Las Vegas urban area.

After you’ve traveled up highway 95 for about 10 miles or so, look off to your right. At the foot of Sheep Mountains, a low range, is a patch of green.  That’s Corn Creek Springs, a desert oasis in an extremely arid environment.

Making your way out to this Las Vegas freebie is woth it because actually seeing an active spring in the desert is highly unusual. Also, it provides a bird watching opportunity in an “out of place” ecosystem that’s been developed as a result.

Corn Creek Springs boasts grasslands, tress and several small ponds which attract a variety of birds, migrating and otherwise.  In addition, it has a visitor’s center with information about the Desert National Wildlife Refuge.

To get to this Las Vegas freebie oasis requires driving around 3 miles down a “not so smooth” gravel road.  This bouncy road is the entrance for the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, as well as Corn Creek.  They’ll be a sign indicating such. Here’s a map showing Corn Creek Springs.
